Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a social and political movement that emerged in response to ongoing incidents of police brutality and systemic racism towards Black people. It began as a hashtag (#BlackLivesMatter) on social media in 2013, after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The movement gained national and international attention in the wake of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2020.

BLM advocates for the recognition and protection of the lives and rights of Black people, and seeks to end racial profiling, police brutality, and systemic racism. The movement also addresses other forms of systemic oppression and injustice faced by the Black community, including income inequality, education disparities, and lack of access to healthcare.

BLM has sparked important conversations and sparked a global movement for racial justice and equality. Its supporters march, protest, and engage in activism to bring attention to these issues and to push for change. The movement has also inspired a new wave of activism and organizing, with people around the world calling for an end to systemic racism and the promotion of racial justice.
